Pop books, not bottles

Day 9. How Important You Think Education Is

I’ve given so much of myself to education, you’d think the answer to this would be really easy for me. but it’s not. I hit writers block, but I think this just about sums it up:

It’s important to me that people are given opportunities to get to higher education, if that’s what they want. It’s important to me that this 3rd grader from East Oakland who is reading a question in English, thinking about it in Spanish, then translating it back to English isn’t assessed in the same standardized way as a kid from Pleasanton. And it’s important to me to feel confident that college graduates are intellectual and knowledgable about the world.

But I look around and I see more folks around here going to the military than to college, because it’s the only practical choice. I see my students failing in an educational structure that fails them. And I see too many people with degrees who are still ignorant.

So yes, education is really important to me. But education is supposed to provide options, and I don’t see it doing that anymore. And until my values are actually reflected in this educational system, I’ll keep on giving.
